Scientists from Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram has recently manufactured the world’s lightest material called silica Aerogel , also known as “blue air”.
This Aerogel has more thermal resistance and could save many lives in Siachen Glacier, when used as filler in Soldier’s uniform.
This material could be used in Earth and Space.
It is the world’s lightest synthetic material made by man in India and is used for insulating rocket’s surface.
Other applications of this material includes, Window glazing, thermal jacket, foot insoles, used for people working in cold climatic environments, etc.,
ISRO has made the lightest known material “frozen smoke” to insulate rocket engines. And other uses are to make light weight clothing, if painted in windows it keeps either warm or cold throughout.
Aerogel matrix is made up of 99 percent air.
Since the material is very fragile and brittle, scientists are in research of making it in even tough.
Future innovations are ahead to use this material in India’s moon rover Chandryaan 2 mission, which is one among the World news articles.
