How Bacteria powers disposable electronics!.


Though Bacteria are considered harmful for human kind medically, there are other benefits of bacteria in industrial and manufacturing units in various ways, which is one of the significant electronic news.

Studies states that, bacteria installed batteries in single sheet can power disposable electronic materials, which reduces fabrication time and cost.

This may lead to the discovery of bio-batteries as power source in resource limited areas, dangerous and other remote locations.

The idea has been proposed by research scientist at Binghamton University, state university of New York.

These inventions are stand-alone, paper based effective methods, which saves life in resource limited locations.

The working mechanism of bacteria powered batteries include,

  1. A ribbon of silver nitrate is placed in a chromatography paper, under a thin layer of wax which acts as cathode.
  2. The pair made as reservoir from conductive polymer acts as anode.
  3. When the paper is folded and bacteria-liquid is added to the same, the microbe’s respiration increases and powers battery.

The essential components that powers battery are, the anode, the cathode and PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane).

There is a chance of decreasing power generation, when the paper is misaligned and there is vertical discontinuity of paper layers.

Disadvantage is that, it would require millions of paper batteries to power a normal 40 watt light bulb.

Since these microorganisms can generate power from any biodegradable source like weeds, wastewater, they are believed to be a future source of power for papertronics.
